THE PROJECT “CULTIVATE SOUTH”

Macro Economic Importance of Maize Farming in Nigerian

Maize is the source of most staple foods in Nigeria. It constitutes at least 80% of processed food items consumed by children of age 5 years old and below

  1. According to the FG, Nigeria spends about #1.87 Trillion ($5Bn) annually to import food.
  • In 2019, Nigeria imported about 400,000 MT of maize estimated at about $278m
  • In 2018, The World Bank estimated there is 75% Arable farm land in Nigeria which translates to about 34m Hectares of land. These are land that can grow food and produce food.
  • IITA, Nigeria reported a maize harvest of 6 MT from 1 Hectare of land in 2020, with improved seedling and smart farming practices. This is an aggressive improvement from the usual 1.69 Tons/Hectare previously recorded in the country.
  • Statista (2021) reported that 28.6m hectares of land in Nigeria are covered with permanent meadows (bushes).
  • By implication, Nigeria can produce about 171.6m MT of maize annually from the 28.6m Hectares of bush/meadows in Nigeria.
  • The International Market value of 171.6m MT of maize is about $119Bn. If we estimate a 30% loss, we can still generate about $83.5Bn annually from maize alone. Smart farming practices include cultivating seasonal crops like maize at least twice annually.
  • Why can’t we do this?? The road from Lagos to PHC is filled with bushes. We are changing these narratives. Won’t you join us?
